Relationships are rarely easy. Obstacles come your way that constantly, test your ability to stay together. One common cause of stress in relationship is when your partner has no motivation to exercise—they have let themselves go and it is now putting pressure and stress on your relationship.

We always want to see our significant others healthy as well as happy. We want them to have energy to be active and spend time with the family while engaging in productive activities.

Here are some ways to motivate your significant other to get moving without putting more pressure on your relationship:

1. Compliment your partner after a workout

couple-exercisingIt may be hard to even get your significant other to walk into a gym, so if they complete a workout with you or on their own make sure you compliment them. Tell them they are doing a great job, that you are impressed with their hard work, and tif you see results, tell them. Compliments go a long way (obviously they need to be true) so say try  something encouraging from the heart and see what happens.

2. Choose fitness routines that don’t seem like exercise

Not everyone is a gym junkie, and they may never want to be. So begging your partner to go to the gym could be a lost cause. Try signing up for a tennis class, dance or cycle class. This is a fun way to raise your heart rate and it may not be dreaded like going to the gym everyday. Getting a group of friends together for a game of soccer, volleyball or basketball is also a great form of exercise that most people are likely to want to take part in.

3. Your Success Could Speak For Itself

I don’t know about you, but if my partner was getting super toned and hot while I was sitting on the couch gaining weight, I would probably get motivated to do the same without them having to even say a word. Walking around with a very in shape partner while you feel overweight and unmotivated is not a good feeling. Getting in shape together, and staying in shape together is one of the best ways to bring you both closer together. Show your partner photos of fit couples on Instagram or Facebook and explain how fun and motivating it would be to do similar workouts and share something new together.

4. Avoid Nagging

The worst way to try and get your partner to workout is by nagging them; it will get annoying and could make them resent you. They will begin to associate working out with the negative energy you are permitting. Your partner may not go to the gym everyday at first, and you shouldn’t put them down when they skip. Instead praise them when they do go. You need to always associate working out with positive energy and thoughts for your partner to want to go.

5. Write Down Your Goals Together

Writing down your goals allow you both to think about what you want to get out of working out. Individuals are always more likely to accomplish a goal if it is written down, this will make your partner really think about why they should workout, and how letting themselves go has affected their health and the ones they love. Hanging up your goals in places you see everyday such as your bathroom mirror, your refrigerator door, and in your car, is a great way to consistently remind yourself throughout the day to stick to what you’re doing. Sometimes we need that extra reminder when we want to skip a workout, or eat a sweet.
